46、Nowadays it is commonly said the human brain works like a computer, maybe even like an advanced supercomputer. Not really. It would be closer to the truth to say it is a greatly enlarged version of what is commonly found in animals of all kinds. Like other species, we use our heads to pin down the patterns of ordinary things and events in the interests of survival. Therefore, while perhaps we all should try to be as rational as humanly possible, there is no reason to think that evolution has had any interest at all in making us rational creatures.
Modern research in the social, psychological, and cognitive sciences is showing us that we actually find it easy to believe almost anything we set our hearts on believing. Even more alarming, we are inclined to accept some things as true that we are not even aware of wanting to believe. We need to accept we aren't the highly rational creatures that philosophers and others have told us we are.
If so, we need to be taught critical thinking because thinking wisely and well isn't something that comes naturally to us just because we are born human beings.
