有一个女孩，到本村教书，上课还不到一周，就被学生轰下台。母亲为她擦泪：“满肚子的东西，有的人倒得出来，有的人倒不出来。也许有更合适的事情等着你去做。”
她外出打工，又被老板辞退，因为手脚太慢。母亲对女儿说：“手脚总是有快有慢的，你一直在念书，怎么跟人比快呢。”
随后她当过纺织工、市场管理员、会计，但无一例外都半途而废了。每次回来，母亲总是安慰她，从来没有抱怨的话。
后来，她凭着一点语言的天赋，做了聋哑学校的辅导员。再后来，她开办了一所残障学校，又在许多城市开办了残障人用品连锁店。
有一天，功成名就的女儿问母亲：“妈，那些年我连连失败，自己都觉得前途非常渺茫，可你为何对我那么有信心呢？”母亲说：“一块地，不适合种麦子，可以试试种豆子；豆子也种不好的话，可以种瓜果；瓜果也不济的话，撒上些荞麦种子也许能开花。一块地，总会有一粒种子适合它，也总会有属于它的一片收成……”
