Direction: Read the passage below and finish the questions according to the passage. Note that you should finish 3 and 5 in complete sentence.

When it comes to friends, I desire those who will share my happiness, who possess wings of their own and who will fly with me. I seek friends whose qualities illuminate (照亮) me and train me up for love. It is for these people that I reserve the glowing hours, too good not to share.    When I was in the eighth grade, I had a friend. We were shy and "too serious" about our studies when it was becoming fashionable with our classmates to learn acceptable social behavior. We said little at school, but she would come to my house and we would sit down with pencils and paper, and one of us would say, "Let's start with a train whistle today." We would sit quietly together and write separate poems or stories that grew out of a train whistle. Then we would read them aloud. At the end of that school year, we, too, were changing into social creatures and the stories and poems stopped.    When I lived for a time in London, I had a friend. He was in despair and I was in despair. But our friendship was based on the idea in each of us that we would be sorry later if we did not explore this great city because we had felt bad at the time. We met every Sunday for five weeks and found many excellent things. We walked until our despairs disappeared and then we parted. We gave London to each other.    For almost four years I have had a remarkable friend whose imagination illuminates mine. We write long letters in which we often discover our strangest selves. Each of us appears, sometimes in a funny way, in the other's dreams. She and I agree that, at certain times, we seem to be parts of the same mind. In my most interesting moments, I often think, "Yes, I must tell..." We have never met.    It is such comforting companions I wish to keep. One bright hour with their kind is worth more to me than the lifetime services of a psychologist, who will only fill up the healing silence necessary to those darkest moments in which I would rather be my own best friend.

When I was in the eighth grade, we did not learn acceptable social behavior because ______.According to paragraph three, we gave London to each other by ______.In the author's opinion, what kind of person can be regarded as a friend?

   ___________________________

In the darkest moments why does the author prefer to stay with her best friend?

Years ago, when I started looking for my first job, wise advisers advised, "Barbara, be enthusiastic (热情 的)! Enthusiasm will take you further than any amount of experience." How right they were!     "Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm." wrote Ralph Waldo Emerson. It is the paste that helps you hang on there, then the going gets tough. It is the inner voice that whispers, "I can do it!" When others shout, "No, you can't!" It took years and years for the early work of Barbara McClintock, a geneticist who won the 1983 Nobel Prize in medicine, to be generally accepted, yet she didn't stop working on her experiments. Work was such a deep pleasure for her that she never thought of stopping.    We are all born with wide-eyed, enthusiastic wonder and it is this childlike wonder that gives enthusiastic people such youthful air, whatever their age. At 90, Cellist Pablo Casals would start his day by playing Bach.    As the music flowed through his fingers, his stooped shoulders would straighten and joy would reappear in his eyes. An author and poet Samuel Ulman once wrote, "Years wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul."    Enthusiastic people also love what they do, regardless of money or title or power. Patricia Mellrath, retired director of the Missouri Repertory Theater in Kansas City, was once asked where she got her enthusiasm. She replied, "My father, a lawyer, long ago told me, 'I never made a dime until I stopped working for money.'"    If we can't do what we love as a full-time career, we can as a hobby. Elizabeth Layton of Wellsville, Kan, was 68 before she began to draw. This activity ended periods of depression that had troubled her for at least 30 years, and the quality of her work led one critic to say, "I am tempted to call Layton a genius."    We need to turn the tears into sweat as we go after "what-can-be". We need to live each moment whole- heartedly, with all our senses-finding pleasure in the sweet smell of a back-yard garden, the sim- ple picture of a six-year-old, the beauty of a rainbow.

The author holds the view that _____.

    [   ]

    A. enthusiastic people will never get old B. enthusiasm can make you succeed and enjoy life C. enthusiasm is more important than experience D. enthusiasm can give people more success and fame

Which of the following can best explain the underlined sentence in the second paragraph?

    [   ]

    A. Enthusiasm can give you courage and strength in difficult times. B. If you don't have enthusiasm, you can achieve nothing. C. Enthusiastic people never consider money and fame. D. Enthusiastic people can gain great fame and honour.

The author mentions Cellist Pablo Casals in the third paragraph to show that _____.

    [   ]

    A. music can arouse people's enthusiasm B. enthusiasm can give people needed inspiration to succeed C. enthusiasm can make people feel young D. enthusiasm can keep people healthy

How many examples are given in the passage to show the importance of enthusiasm?

    [   ]

    A. Three. B. Two. C. Four. D. Five.

It was graduation day at the university where I work and a beautiful day quite unlike the first graduation I attended as a young professor. On that cold day years ago, as we watched the students walking into the hall, one of my colleagues turned to me and said, "Graduation will be one of the happiest and one of the saddest time of your life." At my inquiry, he answered, "Because the students you have gotten to know have to leave."    As years went by, my previous confusion about my colleague's words no longer existed. When I came across naughty students, I have had to rethink why I chose to be a teacher. It obviously isn't the money. Once a former computer science student of mine called me, asking me if I wanted to have a change. He was working at Nintendo Corporation. His salary was higher than my current one, though I have more education and have worked for over a decade. With my programming skills, he said he could get me hired I thanked him, but declined his kind offer.    A few days before this current graduation, while working on final grades, I found a note a student had slipped in with her homework. She thanked me for being her teacher and said the things she had learned in my class-not about math, but about life-would be things she would remember long after the math skills had faded away. As I finished reading, I remembered why I had become a teacher.    Now, on this sunny graduation day, as I again observed the sea of blue hats and gowns, I did so with renewed dedication (奉献) and a deeper sense of satisfaction-I will always be grateful that I am a teacher.

Hearing his colleague's description of graduation for the first time, the author _____.

    [   ]

    A. quite agreed with his colleague  B. thought it very funny C. was very puzzled D. was very sad

The computer science student called up the author because he _____.

    [   ]

    A. wanted to inform the author of his present job  B. tried to persuade the author to work with him C. wanted the author to share his joy and satisfaction D. thought the author wasn't fit to be a teacher

The underlined part blue hats and gowns refers to _____.

    [   ]

    A. university colleagues  B. life memories C. graduates' clothes D. decorations in the hall

The author wrote this passage to _____.

    [   ]

    A. express his devotion to being a teacher B. compare two different graduation ceremonies C. talk about the meaning of graduation D. give advice on how to be a good teacher

The reason why he earns less than the computer science student is that _____.

    [   ]

    A. he was only a young professor B. he didn't do well in his work C. he taught his students more about life than math D. salaries for different careers are different

The American book Who Moved My Cheese has been a bestseller all over the world. It teaches people how to face changes in their lives. Now its author Spence Johnson has written a book just for teens. The book tells us that when facing changes in our lives, like a new school or new friends, don't be afraid. Instead, use this change to make a better life. The book gives an example of a change at school. A school is changing from having two terms to three terms because there are too many students.    Several teens are talking about this. Most of them are unhappy and worried. But Chris is not. He laughs and tells a story about two mice, two "little people" and some cheese.    The four are in a maze (迷宫) looking for the cheese. Here, cheese means something important in life, like moving to a new class or getting into college. But they find the cheese is gone. The mice realize that they can't change what has happened and have to find more cheese. This means finding different dreams. The little people, however, can't do this. They are afraid of changes so they find no cheese.    After Chris finishes the story, the friends understand one thing: to get more cheese, move m a new direction quickly. His friends understand how this can be used in the changes all teens face, such as doing well at school or having good relationships or just feeling good about yourself.
