  • The campaign is over. The celebrations have ended. And the work for US president-elect Barack Obama has begun. The 47-year-old politician rose to the highest post because of his stand against the war in Iraq and his plans to fix a weak economy. But what will the first 47-year-old African-American president do for race relations. Obama’s victory appears to have given blacks and other minorities a true national role model. For years, many looked to athletes and musicians for inspiration. As Darius Turner, an African-American high school student in Los Angeles, told the Los Angeles Times.“Kobe(the basketball player) doesn’t have to be everybody’s role model anymore.” Recent polls also suggest that Obama’s victory has given Americans new optimism about race relations. For example, a USA Today poll found that two-thirds of Americans believe relations between blacks and whites“will finally be worked out”. This is the most hopeful response since the question was first asked during the civil rights revolution in 1963. However, it’s still too early to tell whether Obama’s presidency will begin to solve many of the social problems facing low-income black communities. Although blacks make up only 13 percent of the US population, 55 percent of all prisoners are African-American. Such numbers can be blamed on any number of factors on America’s racist past, a failure of government policy and the collapse of the family unit in black communities. It is unlikely that Obama will be able to reverse(扭转)such trends overnight. However, Bill Bank, an expert of African-American Studies, say that eventually young blacks need to find role models in their own communities.“That’s not Martin Luther King, and not Barack Obama,”he told the Los Angeles Times, “It’s actually the people closest to them. Barack only has so much influence.” In the opinion of black British politician Trevor Phillips, Obama’s rise will contribute more to multiculturalism than to race relations in the US. 52: For years, before Obama was elected president of the US,    . A. Kobe was the only role model for all the blacks B. blacks could only find role models on the basketball court C. minorities in America couldn’t find role models in their real life D. According to Bill Bank,    .

    A. Obama is not the proper role model for African-Americans B. young blacks should not be so much influenced by Obama C. blacks should find other role models because Obama is far from their reality D. it’s better for young blacks to find role models in those who are close to them

What do you think the author is probably going to talk about in the next paragraph?

    A. In what ways Obama will contribute to racial relations in the US. B. How Obama will influence Americans as a national role model. C. How Obama will contribute to multiculturalism in the US. D. Obama—a Successful Black D. Choosing a Right Role Model

  • In “Relax, We’ll Be Fine”, columnist David Brooks writes, “the fact is, despite all the problems, America’s future is extremly bright.”
Mr. Brooks acknowledges that “According to recent survey, 60 percent of Americans think the country is heading in the wrong direction. The same percentage believe that the U.S. is in long-term decline. The political system is not functional. A financial crisis looks unavoidable. There are plenty of reasons to be sad.”
    But, he writes:
“Demographers(人口学家) predict that over the next 40 years, the U.S. population will increase by an additional 100 million people, to 400 million over all. The population will be determined, hardworking and relatively young. In 2050, only a quarter will be over 60, compared with 31 percent in China and 41 percent in Japan.”
As the rising generation leads an economic recovery, it will also participate in a communal
(of community) one. We are living in a global age of social entrepreneurship(创业精神).
In sum, the U.S. is on the edge of a demographic, economic and social recovery, built on its historic strengths. The U.S. has always been good at destructive change. And it’s always been good at decentralized community-building, too. Surely a country with this much going for it is not going to wait around passively and let a rotten political culture drag it down.

  • You can be proud of yourselves, even if you can only make one or two of these green changes. The goal here is to limit carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases, which are closely associated to the big problem of global-warming. Strategy 1: Bring your own cup to Starbucks You’ll get a 10 cent discount, and it’s one less paper cup to end up in a landfill. While you’re there, pick up some free bags of spent coffee grounds to use as ‘‘green’’ fertilizer in your garden. The payoff: The store won’t create more waste when they throw away a cup. Strategy2: Turn off your computer When in standby mode, your PC is still using energy. In fact, 75percent of electricity used in your home comes from electronics that are turned off. The payoff: Turning off a monitor for 40 hours a week may only save $5 a month, but it reduces CO2 by 750 pounds Strategy 3: Reuse plastic bags Instead of throwing away 100 billion plastic bags a year, try and get a second, third, or tenth use out of them. Better yet, next time you shop, try a reusable bag. The payoff: You’re reducing pollution. The amount of oil it would take to make just 14 plastic bags would run your car for one mile. Strategy4: Use recycled paper in the bathroom Most of the toilet paper we use is made from trees found in forests previously untouched by humans. The payoff: If every household replaced one roll of toilet paper with a recycled one, 424000 trees would still be standing. Look for eco-paper towels too. Strategy5: Buy energy-efficient appliances(电器) Replace the old fridge with an Energy Star appliance and you’ll use 15 percent less energy. It might be a little expensive to buy, but you’ll save money on your electricity bills and help the environment. The payoff: If we all used one Energy Star appliance at home, it would be like planting 1. 7 million acres of new trees. Strategy 6: Plant a tree Adding green to your garden is beautiful and earth-pleasing. The payoff: Just one tree will help make cleaner air and save the environment from 5000 pounds of hot carbon dioxide each year.

What is the best title for the passage?

    A. Ways to save money at home B. Ways to be earth-friendly C. Ways to end global-warming D. Ways to limit carbon dioxide

What benefits do these strategies have in common?

    A. They all help reduce the use of energy like electricity. B. They all cut down the amount of the paper. C. They all result in producing less greenhouse gases. D. They all help to preserve our trees and forest. 56.Which strategies suggest recycling or reuse of things? A.Strategies 1&3   B.Strategies 2&5  C.Strategies 3&6   D.Strategies 4&5.
